Normally, each course consists of sets of 5 'contact hours', delivered in equal-length blocks over two consecutive weeks. The structure of the blocks is at the discretion of the lecturer, but they normally include a break for discussion, problems, and/or refreshment. Some sort of 'homework' is normally incorporated, to engage students. (This need not be traditional homework; e.g., students may be asked to undertake guided reading, write abstracts of key papers, etc.) Student effort should be ca. 4-8hrs per course in addition to lecture hours.
There are 3 courses per term (scheduled two weeks on, one week off; see below).
All first-year postgrads are expected to attend all lectures (if you have a good reason for being unable to attend, you must send your "apologies for absence", in advance, to the lecturer); any other students are free to attend optionally. The two Departments liaise to generate a combined record sheet to monitor attendance, with absences investigated at the relevant host institute. We welcome interested postgrads from other years, from other institutes,, and other Departments.
