PHAS 2112: Astrophysical Processes,

From Nebulae to Stars

tux

THESE PAGES ARE NO LONGER MAINTAINED; THE COURSE IS TAUGHT BY DR. VITI FROM 2011

Moodle key: 09P2112 (but Moodle will just point you here).

A short 'Aims & Syllabus' listing is available. The provisional division of 29 lectures among topics is:  7 for the diffuse, neutral gas;
7 for ionized nebulae;   4 for  stellar atmospheres;  4 for stellar structures;  5 for nuclear processes

Exam

The 2010 exam is on Tuesday May 25, 10:00, in venue EXAMACH (the American Church, in Tottenham Court Road opposite Heals).

Old exam papers are available for
2005,
2006,
2007,
2008, and
2009.
Note that the course identifier [but not the name, or syllabus] was changed in 2006, and in previous years was 2B12. The course has been under continual development and revision, particularly since a change of lecturer in 2007. This means that there are one or two minor topics taught and examined in previous years that may not be taught in current lectures (and vice versa). Anything not taught in lectures this year won't be examined this year!

As a revision aid, a summary of questions asked in these recent papers is available as a pdf file.

Suggested Reading

PHAS2112 is a `portmanteau' course, and the notes were assembled from many sources. Perhaps the single most useful reference work for students is Bowers & Deeming (out of print, but there are five 2-volume sets available in the UCL Library).

I hope you'll find the detailed lecture notes useful, too...

Lecture Notes

The notes contain significant amounts of material in additional to that delivered in lectures. I developed a lot of this for my own interest(!) and/or to develop my own understanding of the material; some of it may be of interest to students, but of course I do not expect you to be familiar with anything not discussed in lectures (and it's certainly not examinable). In general, I try to identify such material in the notes by the use of a smaller font.

Please let me know if you find any misteaks in the notes!
